Ever since Lana Del Rey hit the scene with her hit single “Born to Die,” flower crowns have become more popular than ever. While you can buy your own flower crown at many fashion stores, there is something awesome about making your own; it ensures you have a truly unique piece. Look no further, because in one short hour, you can have your own flower crown!

Before you get started, you will need a few things at your local craft store. First, you will need to pick out some silk flowers (or real ones, if you would prefer).

The amount of flowers will vary widely by how big you want your crown to be and how big the flowers you choose are. Err on the side of caution, and always get a few more than you think you might need.

If you want one just like Lana Del Rey’s in her “Born to Die” music video, you will need two different hues of blue roses as well as a few white roses to get the look. Try to get about 10 to 12 flowers of each color. When you are cutting the flowers, leave a large stem so that you can layer them more easily.

For the rest of your supplies, you will also need to gather together some florist wire, shears (or a sharp pair of scissors), floral tape, and pliers. It is important that you get floral tape that matches is either the classic dark green floral tape, or ribbon that will match your flowers, as these will be slightly visible when you are wearing it. For example, if you are making a black flower crown, get black floral tape.

The first step is very simple; take your floral wire and create a circle that will comfortable fit around your head. Once you have done that, wrap more wire around your circle to make it extra sturdy.

Now that you have the base of your crown, it is time to start adding the flowers. Cut the first flower, and place it in the desired direction on the crown. Using about three to four inches of wire, tightly wrap it in place with your pliers.

Continue to add your flowers and wrap them with your wire until you have your desired look. You can either make a half of a crown for a headband, or you can line the flowers all the way around for a full halo-style crown. If you are making the half-crown, you will need the floral tape to secure the exposed wire and ensure that it will not cut you.

To finish your half-crown, simply wrap the exposed wire with your floral tape. Wrap it about two or three times to keep it secure. Once you have done that, you have your very own homemade flower crown!
