We are past the age of paper cups and Starbucks coffee. With the rise in prices and the annoyingly long lines, more and more of our parents are sticking to making their coffees and teas at home.

With this new trend comes an amazing opportunity. For Mother’s Day, instead of the usual flower and card combo (that, let’s be honest, has gotten old), how about channel your inner child and make her a personalized Mother’s Day gift?

Thanks to The Wonder Forest, a beautiful DIY watercolor mug is within reach — for fairly cheap! All you will need is three different tubes of porcelain paint, a plain porcelain mug, a brush, some water in a plastic cup, and an oven.

To get started, take a wet paintbrush, and dip it into whichever colored porcelain paint you want to start with. The more water you add, the more the color will run. Start painting your mug, and just experiment! Try painting at the top, or start at the bottom. Use some masking tape to make straight lines while painting around it. The sky is the limit!

When you are done, simply let your freshly painted mug dry for about 15 to 20 minutes. While you are waiting for it to dry, preheat your oven at 350 degrees. If you did apply tape, make sure to remove it before putting the mug in the oven!

Once your mug is dry, put it in the oven for about 20 minutes. This will allow the paint to harden to the mug so it will not chip or rub off when you wash it.

Once the mug is cool, you have a beautiful new watercolor mug you designed yourself! It is super easy and fun to do with friends, too. You can make a night of wine and painting mugs with your mom or your friends!
