Feeling like the mood of your flat is falling a little, well, flat? Here are four innovative ways you can spice up your apartment using only what you can find at your local thrift store:

1. Hang vinyl record album art.

Odds are your local thrift store has a dollar bin full of inexpensive records. Look through these forgotten treasures for old artists that you like, or just cool album art that you think would look awesome on the wall. Then, remove the vinyl records from inside and mount them in any pattern you like! Frame them or leave them exposed to change the aesthetic depending on the room. The cool thing about this is that you can do something interesting with the vinyl records themselves. You can fan them out in interesting patterns or (if you’re not shocked by the sacrilege) shatter the records and hang the pieces in different designs.

2. Make a collage out of vintage photographs.

Usually at the register, or somewhere in the depths of every thrift store, is a basket full of abandoned old photographs. Dig through these old treasures, and pick out a bundle of them that speak to you. Bring life to these old mementos and any room by arranging them on the wall in an interesting design. Although the identities of the people in the pictures and their lives may always remain a mystery, you can make up your own stories to accompany these old memories.

3. Acquire an old lantern.

If you’re lucky enough to stumble upon an old lantern in the course of your thrift shopping, buy it! Not only is it an innovative and energy saving way to light a room, it provides a classic rustic-chic accent to any room. You can get creative with finding some way to hang it on the wall, or simply display it on a table.

4. Doilies.

Go to the thrift store and collect all of your Grandma Edith’s old doilies. Yes, you heard us correctly. Buy up a bunch of these formerly frilly table accents and get creative; you can mount them on the wall, creating some interesting wall art and flowery designs, or even frame them. If they are old enough, they may look a bit dingy, having faded over the years. If this is the case, you can bleach them white or get crafty with some dye. Your choice!
