Even with all the tricks in the world, there is only so much willpower you can conjure up in a single day. Tackle major decisions or difficult work in the mornings when you are feeling more energized and willful instead of putting it all off until the evenings, when your body and mind are more drained.

 

Don’t bet on your future self being any different than your present self.

A common mistake people make when losing a battle with willpower is justifying putting off the things they have to do to reach their goals by saying they will start tomorrow. A general rule is that the things we are not willing to push ourselves to do today are likely not going to be easy for our future selves to commit to either. We all have moments of weakness, but one of the best tricks for being able to overcome them is being able to visualize what it will look like when you have achieved your goals. Whether you’re trying to get yourself to start a long report or to get a workout in for the day, focusing on all of the work it will take to get through a task is enough to exhaust you before you have even begun. Being able to shift your focus to the thought of how great it will feel when you have accomplished your task, though, can help you stay on track by motivating you to power through even the most grueling task.

 

Go easy on yourself.

No matter how much progress you make, or how good you get at controlling your impulses and keeping your willpower strong, nobody is perfect. You are sure to hit a few setbacks, but the important thing is being able to handle them positively without being too hard on yourself. Rather than dwelling on your setbacks, simply focus on what you can learn from them before putting them behind you and moving on. The most important thing is moving forward and realizing that not just every day, but every moment, is an opportunity to recommit to your goals and work towards healthier habits.
