Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce Jenner, came out last year as a transgender woman, and has since labeled herself as an advocate and activist for the transgender community. However, Jenner recently declared herself as a supporter for presidential candidate, Ted Cruz, and wishes to be his “trans ambassador.” This endorsement of Cruz by an admired member of the trans community is sparking major controversy.

Jenner has overall been very successful in spreading visibility for the transgender community, but since her announcement of support for Cruz, the public has become skeptical of her activism. Jenner’s awareness of Cruz’s religious and conservative values doesn’t stop her from supporting the candidate. She expressed that her outlook is that Cruz is “very conservative, and a great constitutionalist, and a very articulate man.” Jenner continues to openly be in support of the Republican candidate because of their agreements in political and social issues.

Cruz is a Texas Senator, Tea Party leader, against women’s rights, and publicly anti-LGBT. Cruz also has made statements claiming that homosexuals are satanic and should be compared to satan, and blamed transgender liberal activists for domestic terrorism after the Planned Parenthood shootings in Colorado last year. By supporting a candidate that enforces these types of beliefs, Jenner’s credibility is being tested tremendously. Being in support of a Republican candidate that blatantly shows hatred and negative allegations towards transgender rights is hugely hurting Jenner’s foothold in trans activism, which is a large blow to the LGBT community.

Much of the public is upset with Jenner’s ideology about the situation, and her differing outlook than that of the public, of how Cruz’s social approaches would negatively affect the people in which she supposedly endorses. For example, Jenner’s main concern with the economic state is that of underemployment. She believes that a more capitalist approach would work to increase jobs and lower the unemployment rate. However, having a candidate with social beliefs like Cruz would potentially cause anti-transgender discrimination to be heavily prevalent throughout the workforce, even more than it is today.

An official endorsement for Cruz is yet to be announced, though Jenner’s statements suggest one in the future.
