Late last month, Fox News “The Intelligence Report” host Trish Regan spoke with Venezuelan human rights activist and president of the Human Rights Foundation, Thor Halvorssen. The segment in question was clearly angled to be an anti-Bernie Sanders story; unfortunately for Fox, it resulted in a surprise endorsement for Sanders and a slap in the face instead.

It was obvious that Fox News’ intention for this interview was to delegitimize Sanders’ campaign by making his socialistic beliefs seem inaccurate and using heavy appeal-to-fear tactics. Regan was quick to jump to the conclusion that Halvorssen would be in agreement with conservative values toward socialism.

However, Halvorssen’s previous statement that socialism is a violation to basic human rights was largely misinterpreted by Fox. He makes his beliefs clear that socialism can and does work in countries such as Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, where the countries are not violating their citizens’ rights, and therefore can have successful social governments. When an authoritarian government practices socialism and uses is it as a cover to loot the economy, that is where the problem begins; and that is the reason the public falsely misreads it.

As Regan is beginning to realize Halvorssen’s intentions, he then states:

I actually made the largest contribution allowable to the campaign of Bernie Sanders. The Democratic front-runner, right now, unfortunately, has taken millions and millions of dollars from many dictatorships: Algeria, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia…I would much rather have Bernie Sanders be the Democratic front-runner, than a person who takes money from dictatorships — unquestionably.”

He then compares the atrocities committed to the beliefs of Republican front-runners such as Donald Trump, and ends the interview with the statement:

“I’d rather have a Democratic Socialist than a supporter of Dictatorships in the White House.”
