Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has allegedly been taking contributions from lobbyists associated with the fossil fuel industry. Despite Clinton’s outward disapproval and acknowledgment of climate change, she still takes support from individuals who sell, or have sold, their services to fossil fuel companies. This is deeply hurting the legitimacy of her pro-environmental policies, causing controversy throughout the public, especially with Greenpeace activists.

Clinton was confronted by a Greenpeace activist at a rally last week, where she was asked if she would stop accepting money from fossil fuel companies. Specifically, activist Eva Resnick-Day asked, “Will you act on your word to reject fossil fuel money in the future in your campaign?” Clinton’s response was defensive, aggressive and in denial considering the remarks. She passionately responded with, “I do not have, I have money from people who work for fossil fuel companies. I am so sick of the Sanders campaign lying about me! I’m sick of it.” Her campaign also released a declaration that the candidate has not taken any money from the fossil fuel industry or oil and gas industry PACS.

Slate states, “Hillary has received hundreds of thousands of dollars from the individuals who work for the industry. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, her campaign has received more than $300,000 from oil and gas industry employees this cycle.”

The statement is technically true. Clinton has not accepted donations directly from fossil fuel corporations. However, she accepts huge amounts of donations from individuals associated with the industry. The Democratic candidate also immediately made the assumption, despite Resnick-Day declaring herself a Greenpeace activist, that the question was an attack by a Sanders supporter. Clinton used the question as an opportunity to talk down to the Sanders’ campaign.
