He is a 74-year-old conservative Polish politician with a bad boy image, and is no stranger to controversy. Recently, his mouth got him into trouble yet again for spouting sexist statements about women during a debate in a European Parliament (EP) gathering. Korwin-Mikke invoked a heated response from one woman in the group after he declared women to be “weaker,” “smaller,” “less intelligent,” and advised they should earn less money than men.
EP President Antonio Tajani has begun an investigation into the sexist remarks Korwin-Mikke made during the session, which could result in sanctions against him. Penalties for sanctions imposed could mean a reprimand, a fine, or a temporary suspension. London Labour MEP Seb Dance suggests a call for an agreement to exclude Korwin-Mikke.
“Too often, nationalists and extremists hide behind free speech when spewing out their hatred and bile. They must be held to account and there must be consequences.”
Spanish Socialist MEP Iratxe Garcia Perez simply could not tolerate it anymore and answered Korwin-Mikke’s sexist rant.
In response to Korwin-Mikke, she stated,
“According to what you’re saying and your theory I wouldn’t have the right to be here as a member of parliament. I know you’re very upset and very concerned about the fact we women can represent citizens on an equal footing with you. I think I need to defend European women against men like you.”
Korwin-Mikke, who believes women should lose their right to vote, allied with Ukip and ran as a presidential candidate for the Republic of Poland back in 2015. He is a highly educated man, but is widely considered to be a man of poor judgment. He has been repeatedly suspended for racist and sexist comments made openly. He has even gone as far as to state his belief that child pornography should be legalized, even though he himself is a father.
He gave conflicting views during an interview with The Telegraph during election year of 2015 on the subject. He stated that he believed child abusers should be “severely punished,” yet he also believed that if the child pornography was created “without abuse,” it should be legal.
Before we pick up stones to throw at him, we should remember that while his views are highly inappropriate, he is saying out loud what others may think and not speak. It is also important to note that those who raised him, especially the women, are at least partially responsible for his sexist, racist views.
His own mother is believed to have passed away when he was very young, and not much is known about his upbringing. What is obvious is that the wrong messages were clearly sent to him about race, right versus wrong, and the value of women at a very young age.
What do you think should be done about politicians who speak such blatantly inappropriate views? Let’s discuss here or on Twitter: @lcarterwriter.
