Large groups of immigrants have been heading to Europe in recent months, and now the UN has called for Europe’s nations to take in 200,000 refugees made up of Syrians, Afghans, and Eritreans.

Immigrants are seeking refuge in Europe because civil war is running rampant in their home countries. The head of the UN refugee agency, Antonio Guterres, has told Europe’s leaders to mobilize their “full force,” but some of them are unwilling to lend a helping hand. In Hungary, hundreds of immigrants are trying to make their way into Germany through Austria with no luck after Hungarian MPs approved tighter borders.

Thousands of immigrants are making Germany their destination because of its history of taking in refugees. Germany has been accepting thousands of these immigrants every day, unlike many other European countries that are turning them away. Austria was outraged by those that weren’t supporting immigrants, and made a statement calling for them to help.

Austria’s Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner stated that “all of Europe must wake up now. The dreaming has to end now … It’s up to the continent of Europe.”

Pope Francis reaches out to a crowd of people

The refugees have come a long way for safety, and many of the immigrants’ lives are at risk during the journey. About 50 people may have drowned after their boat sank off the coast of Libya during their escape to Europe. A Syrian family’s toddler drowned while they made their way to Greece, proving the danger these people are facing for their chance at refuge.

While some are turning away refugees, Pope Francis has joined the fight to help the immigrants in their hour of need. On Sunday, Pope Francis called for “every religious community, every monastery, every sanctuary of Europe host a family, starting from my diocese of Rome.” He also assured refugees that they will be welcomed into the Vatican’s parishes.

Will more countries follow the UN’s orders or is it up to a few countries to take in 200,000 refugees? Will immigrants continue to head towards Europe? Leave a comment or talk to me on Twitter @Karbowski_Devon.
