Just as bemusing Miranda Priestly stuck it to Anne Hathaway’s character in “The Devil Wears Prada,” it’s true that fashion represents much more than what individuals choose to clothe themselves with. Various award ceremonies in particular muse fashion to be an afterthought of the evening, rendering red-carpet press coverage a necessary evil rather than a celebration. The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Fashion Awards instead deem fashion to be embedded in our collective dream as a culture, inspiring individuals to aspire to become the best possible versions of themselves.

Film Director and Screenwriter, host John Waters relayed this idea during the CFDA Fashion Awards earlier this month:

“As all the CFDA winners know, fashion is power. Change your clothes three times a day and you can take over the world!”

Fashion aids individuals in making powerful statements, whether symbolically on the runway or in everyday life, and CFDA recognizes this. The CFDA Fashion Awards recognizes extraordinary design excellence in: womenswear, menswear, accessories, as well as accomplishments in journalism, creative vision, and lifetime achievement.

Rihanna notoriously wowed audiences worldwide with her “Bad Gal Ri-Ri” stunning signature look.

Extraordinary achievements were recognized throughout the night and several stand-outs dominated the audience’s attention as well. Designer Tom Ford received this year’s Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award while Rihanna was named Fashion Icon of 2014.  Past Fashion Icon Award Winners include Johnny Depp, Lady Gaga and Iman, among others.

Nominations for each award category are submitted by The CFDA Fashion Awards Guild, an invitation only network comprised of top fashion retailers, journalists, stylists, influencers and the 450+ member designers of the CFDA.

The 2014 CFDA Fashion Awards were held on Monday, June 2 at Alice Tully Hall inside the Lincoln Center in New York City.
