Beginning in the late 2010’s, we have seen the rise of a few mysterious fads that are as popular with young ladies as they are confusing to older generations.

Lets start with first things first. Before the following trends were hip, they never crossed people’s minds as socially acceptable. After we throw them to the curb, they will most likely go down in history as the most absurd things to become fashionable.

Leggings as pants. This is truly one of the biggest mysteries of the fashion world. Leggings were created as a casual cover up to go under long shirts and sloucy dresses when you wanted to dress a little more modestly. So how did these undergarments become the only garment we wear in lieu of pants under short shirts? Jeggings are one thing — perhaps even the best thing, considering they have the durability of jeans and the comfort of leggings — but once underwear lines start showing and everything but the color of your skin is showing through the thin material of your cotton leggings, there is something wrong.

Too short shorts. We don’t mean to be judgmental, but we will just come out and say it here: you shouldn’t need a Brazilian when you aren’t wearing beachwear. This trend is as repulsive as it is uncomfortable. Perhaps we lack the confidence, or maybe we fear running into our grandmother’s friends in public. Whatever the case, we want this trend to end as soon as possible, preferably before we have to shave again.

Heeled Tennis Shoes. Our bias seems to be leaning in the direction of mixed categories here. The gym and everything else should be two separate genres as far as we are concerned and that includes footwear. One thing is for sure; athletic shoes with a heel on them aren’t going anywhere near a 10 foot radius of a gym, so why bother pretending? Plus, they honestly are not all that comfortable and difficult to match with non-gym clothing. Our advice? Buy yourself one pair of nice sneakers and another pair of heels. You won’t regret the extra splurge.

TOMS. We will leave business controversies for another article and stick to the fashion right now. TOMS shoes are comfortable, yes. They are also convenient slip ons for summer time. But that is where the positive attributes end. In 10 years, we will all be looking back wondering why a large majority of the population strode around wearing outdoor canvas slippers in such confidence. In addition, let’s take a moment to be honest with ourselves: do they really add anything to your otherwise classy outfit?

As great as it is to make history, take note carefully of the above trends, so you don’t mistakenly carve out a spot on the wrong side of future history textbooks.
