Hair pins and barrettes are your fashionable best friends this season as hair cutting can be avoided and styles can be created all with the use of a single pin (or hundreds!) to achieve a sophisticated look. You can either hide those hair pins to demonstrate a playful, “Gatsby-inspired” faux bob, or you can show them off like the celebs this summer.

Naomi Watts, Amy Adams, Freida Pinto, and Olivia Wilde. What do they all have in common? Each of these fashion-forward starlets debuted faux bobs on the red carpet, yet not one of these celebs has chopped off all of her hair! Wouldn’t you like to physically see what your hair would look like with a bob cut before you actually decide to cut all? You could be in luck.

A faux bob is an excellent style to try, whether you’re thinking of going drastically shorter in length or if you want to simply avoid the summer heat. Simple bobby pins help you achieve the look of the faux bob; by braiding a longer hairstyle and tucking it under with the use of pins, your look can transform the entire face (to your pleasure or distaste!) while still having the security of being able to trade back to a more familiar look.

Suppose you’ve already taken the plunge and gone shorter but still want to play with the pinned trend? In this case, you could consider taking the cue from Kate Mara and adjusting your evening look. The “House of Cards” roadkill actress looked super sleek this weekend at the Creative Arts Emmy’s when she showed of her bob and barrette trend. This isn’t the first time Mara has taken this look and made it strictly hers. The star has been experimenting with visibly bobby pins secured just above her neck the entire summer. Who can blame her? It makes the crown of her hair a bit more voluminous while it gives her look a signature feel, too.

Barrettes aren’t reserved for your childhood play dates any longer; Grandma was right to send so many vintage-inspired hair pins and barrettes all those birthdays ago. Get hip for fall and dig them back up again. Your wardrobe will be happy you did.

What do you think of the visible bobby pin/shorter hair trend? Which style would you try? I’d love to hear what you think! Share your thoughts in the comments or tweet me @Kelseymbro
