A lot of us are probably aware that the aging of skin can start really early — as early as your teens. Even though we are aware of this, we aren’t always aware of the things we do daily that ages our skin faster.

 

Here are a list of six things to either avoid or do in moderation to keep a youthful skin for as long as you can!

 

1. Hot showers: One of the hardest things for people to do in moderation or avoid altogether? Hot water. Taking hot showers or climbing into the jacuzzi can actually age your skin much more quickly than lack of moisturizer. It’s also bad for your hair and can cause breakage.

The cure: if you are a huge fan of hot showers, just try rinsing off with cold water before getting out of the shower. This also applies to when you’re just washing your face. If you can, try washing your face with cold water. This actually tightens the skin and stops aging!

 

2. Skin Care Products: Who knew that cheap shampoo, conditioner, lotions, and body washes can actually damage our skin because they are too acidic? According to Better Health Channel, a government funded website, “age-related dryness will be further exacerbated by skin irritants such as perfumed soaps [and] heavily chlorinated swimming pools… Use soaps, body washes or shampoos that are ‘neutral’ and pH-balanced (neither too acidic nor too alkaline).”

The cure: The best pH balanced body lotion? Eucerin Daily Skin Balance Skin-Fortifying Body Lotion! It can be easily found at your local drug store. 

 

3. Too little fat: Too much sugar and too little fat can actually cause your skin to age faster! Although too much sugar might not be a surprise, you might be surprised to hear that too little fat can cause skin aging. According to MSN Healthy Living, “despite what you’ve been told, fat helps your body absorb antioxidants and vitamins and strengthens your epidermis (the outermost layers of skin) for a brighter, smoother complexion.”

The cure: This doesn’t mean go out and gorge on pizza. Just don’t try to keep your fat content to a low 0g a day. Eat that chicken, beef, or a handful of nuts! Try dipping some tasty bread in olive oil! There is a difference between good fats and bad fats, but don’t avoid fats all together.

 

4. Excessive Cardio: You’re probably having one of two reactions: either you’re happy you have a great excuse not to exercise, or you’re shaking your head in disbelief. According to MSN Healthy Living, “stress from exercise breaks down your skin’s collagen, leading to premature wrinkles.” This is also applicable to extreme stress as in stress at home, work, or with your family. It’s no wonder that causing your body excess stress in the gym would cause skin aging!

The cure: Just make sure that when you’re working out, you rotate your exercises daily. Do cardio one day, yoga the next, and strength training the following day. This will easily help you avoid the excess cardio.

 

5. Straws: This has got to be the most surprising, but probably the easiest to find a solution for. According to Refinery 29, “just like squinting, repeated facial expressions and movements will break down collagen and elastin fibers. When using a straw, you have to purse your lips, causing unnecessary lines and wrinkles around the mouth.” Weird, right?

The cure: This sure is simple: just take that lid off and drink without a straw.

 

6. Tanning: I’m sure a lot of us know this already.  That extra exposure to the sun without wearing sunscreen can cause your skin to age faster. Not to mention, It’s also one of the easiest ways to get skin cancer. According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, “more than 90 percent of the visible changes commonly attributed to skin aging are caused by the sun.”

The cure: Just make sure to always carry some sunscreen with you as it helps stop skin aging and helps avoid skin cancer. And please, avoid the tanning salon.
