Summer is here, which means poolside tanning, barbeques, and camping. One thing you do not want to have to worry about in the hot weather however is your hair. Below, we have gathered a few essential summer tips from hair stylists to keep you looking your best all summer long.

1. Avoid Damage. Blow drying your hair can be more damaging than straightening because your hair is still wet, and thus more susceptible to breakage. The summer heat is the perfect time to let your hair air dry, and you can just straighten your dry hair for the next day or a night out later on. This trick will give your hair a break over the summer to help repair and restore the damage caused from your heat tools.

2. Ponytails and Braids. These two time old favorites are perfect for summer because not only will they keep hairs off your neck, but they are also quick and easy. Try mixing up your normal ponytail with a fishtail braid. If you still need help perfecting the look try this tutorial from The Beauty Department. For a professional finished look, tame flyaway with a sculpting cream or some Vaseline.

3. Skip the Highlights. Blondes often want to go lighter for summer, but the sun will actually lighten up your hair naturally. In an interview with Women’s Health Magazine, stylist Eva Scrivo suggests, “highlighting less during the summer months and doing more to protect your hair, such as using products formulated with sunscreen.” For blondes, Fitness Magazine also suggests “mixing together a quarter cup of baby shampoo and one tablespoon of baking soda. Coat dry strands with the paste, leave it on for 10 minutes, and then rinse.” This will help eliminate buildup and keep you from having brassy hair.

4. Fight Frizz. Frizzy hair affects everyone and is at its peak during hot summer months. To avoid frizz as much as possible use moisturizing products. Jeannine Morris, of Refinery 29, says “Sun, chlorine, and salt water will take toll on your strands by drying them out — and no matter what your hair type, dry hair frizzes.” To avoid dry hair you want to use moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, followed by a serum before drying. Use a wide tooth comb with wet hair, then dry with a boar bristle brush to avoid breakage. When drying remember to blow in the direction of the hair, and lock in your look with a finishing hair spray, like Moroccan Oil Luminous Hairspray.

5. Condition. Condition, condition, condition. Whether it is in the shower, an overnight hair mask, or dry conditioner, this is one step you cannot skip this summer. Hot temperature, extended UV exposure, chlorine, and salt water all dry out hair follicles. Even if you skip washing your hair in the summer and opt for dry shampoo, make sure you are using a dry conditioner as well to keep your hair in order to keep it moisturized.
