Our mothers always told us that trends come back into fashion, but it is unlikely that many of us believed them. If anything, we looked at her closet full of unworn clothes from the 80’s and 90’s in silent disgust, concluding that her overflowing collection of clothing was surely a sign of pre-menopausal hoarding.

Now, not even a decade later we are running back, hoping to snag a vintage treasure.

Aside from Doc Martins and oversized reading glasses, there are plenty of classics that are coming back in style. Here are a few of our favorite mom-approved styles.

1. Lip Liner. Lip liner has a bad reputation of making people look over done, but if you use a natural shade instead of 90’s red and stay within your own natural lip line, it can actually help your lips look more defined and clean. Try using a liner that is the same color as your lips, or the lipstick you plan on wearing.

2. Acid Wash Jeans. Acid wash jeans seem to ping pong from being fashion must-have’s to fashion faux pas every few years. Right now though they are on the positive end of the spectrum; therefore, if you have a pair now would be the time to pull them out. If you do not, you can create your own by following our simple tutorial.

3. Fanny Packs. You probably remember these clever bags from your days at summer camp; however, the age old classics are getting a modern makeover. Leather, black, and printed fanny packs can be worn with cutoffs and your favorite accessories for a sporty chic look.

4. Hoop Earrings. Big hoop earrings are a quick and easy way to spice up any outfit, and they match almost anything. Khloe Kardashian pairs her hoops with graphic t-shirts and plaid flannel button ups tied around her waist for an all around edgy grunge look.

5. Red Lipstick. Bright red lips, dark red lips, berry red lips, it does not matter what shade you choose, what matters is that red lipstick is back and its bigger than ever. Now is the perfect time to experiment with a plethora of shades to see what suits your face. Take a peek at our dark lipstick guide to help pair your lipstick with complementary makeup.

6. Cage Sandals. Remember those elastic shoes your mom used to wear with long cotton dresses? The ones you swore you would never own? Well, this might be the one time it is good to go back on your word. T-strap cage sandals like those from Mootsies Tootsies and Club Coastal are coming back in style. They are undeniably comfortable and they match the modern minimalistic look that is in right now. To avoid recreating family photos of your mother, try pairing the shoes with clothing that has a modern shape to it, instead of your mom’s old dresses. Mix old with new to create a cutting edge look.
