It’s surprising to most that Disney, the king of all animation studios, has never won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. They have received eight nominations since the award’s inception, but claimed the prize as their own. This year, though, marks their greatest chance at winning to date.

With the Academy Awards happening so soon, it’s looking like the movie “Frozen” is going to take home the gold. No surprise there. The film has proven to be a box office juggernaut and has been hailed as the studio’s best since their 90’s streak of brilliance. “Frozen” is looking like your best bet for the Oscar pool, but there is one film that could potentially snatch it away.

That film is Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Wind Rises.” This is yet another film from the great director that is being hailed as a masterpiece. The Academy has given the award to Miyazaki in the past, and it would not be surprising to see them do it again.

“The Wind Rises” is the stronger of the two nominees, but expect “Frozen” to win. It has too much going for it not to.

Other nominees include the French-Belgian film Ernest & Celestine and American studio pictures, “The Croods” and “Despicable Me 2.” These are decent nominees, but none of them have a chance of winning.

It was a little surprising to see “The Croods” and “Despicable Me 2” receive nominations over “Monsters University.” “The Croods” is understandable, as visually that film is stunning, but “Despicable Me 2” is simply a weaker film than Pixar’s flawed, but ultimately successful prequel to “Monsters Inc.”
