There are a growing number of well produced shows from across Africa that are available to enjoy online. We’ve scoured the web and found our favorite titles to share with you. Check out our six picks!

The Mating Game

“The Mating Game” is a South African drama that looks at modern romance and family relationships from a feminine perspective. We follow three women looking for love in Johannesburg, one of whom is a lesbian looking to start a family. “The Mating Game” tackles dating and the search for emotional fulfillment in South Africa. All 13 episodes are available on Buni.tv.

Gidi Up

“Gidi Up” is a Nigerian series centered on four young adults looking to achieve their dreams in Lagos. It launched as a web series uniquely available on Ndani TV before it expanded to include television by its second season. “Gidi Up” is a fast paced series, almost as fast paced as the city it’s set in. It is available on Youtube.

Pearl of Africa

Cleopatra Kambugu is a 27-year-old transgender woman from Uganda. “Pearl of Africa” shows us a glimpse in her life in the transphobic environment of the country. Kambugu stars in this documentary, directed by Jonny von Wallström, that follows her as she transitions and questions gender expression and identity in her country. Series are up on Youtube.

An African City

No, this is not the African “Sex and the City.” “An African City” follows the stories of 21st century women living in, well, an African city. This series, created by Nicole Amarteifio, shows the lives and loves of five friends in Accra, the capital of Ghana. It hit 1 million views within weeks of its release, and is considered one of Ghana’s most successful Youtube series. Season 2 is out already, but make sure to catch up with the first season on Youtube.

Windeck

“Windeck” is the Angolan telenovela that was nominated in the Best Telenovela category at the 2013 International Emmys. Filled with colorful characters around Divo, a fashion magazine in the bustling Angolan capital Luanda, “Windeck” follows Victoria Kassibanja’s ruthless struggle to the top. This series is a daring one, too — three of its main characters are LGBT, a rare inclusion in a high budget African television show. You can watch all episodes of “Windeck” on Youtube, but there’s a catch, the videos are not subtitled in English. Still, it’s worth ogling at the beautiful people and fashion.

Don’t Mess with Kansiime

Ugandan Anne Kansiime is Africa’s comedy queen. The award winning comedian, actress, and TV presenter hosts her own show that will leave you rolling on the floor with laughter. Her Youtube channel has garnered over 15 million views.
