She is fancy and knows how to work. The rising Aussie rapper Iggy Azalea (née Amethyst Amelia Kelly) is taking the hip-hop scene by storm. “No money, no family/ Sixteen in the middle of Miami” the lyrics to the Iggy Azalea’s song, “Work,” tell the story of the Australian rapper. Knowing from an early age that she wanted to pursue a career in hip-hop, she dropped out of high school, took a solo flight to the United States, and has worked her way up ever since.

The female rapper started to gain popularity with her freestyle videos on Youtube, and released her first album entitled “Ignorant Art” in 2011. She was noticed for her unique rapping style, her lyrically controversial songs, and the fact that she was a white, female, rap artist. The rapper wants her music to “make people question and redefine old ideals” and change the way they view who can or cannot make a certain type of music.

This April, Iggy Azalea released her new album, “The New Classic,” with the same hopes of redefining old ideals. In an interview with Billboard in 2013, Iggy Azalea expressed how she believes her generation is worth more than they give themselves credit for saying,

“I wish I was a teenager in 1997, but with ‘The New Classic,’ I want younger generations to look back on what we’re doing now and say, ‘I wish I was a teenager in 2014.’ I come from an era of kids who are always being told that what we make is not classic. But my album says to people my age, ‘Don’t devalue that we can be culturally significant — because we can be’.

Iggy Azalea is breaking the mold of what a rapper looks and sounds like. She wants people to see that one can be successful in an industry where you do not fit the established mold. As a white female in the hip-hop genre, Azalea is definitely breaking that mold. She questions why people are so stuck on her race and gender stating, “why is it that you can have The Rolling Stones, but a white rapper is weird? The Rolling Stones were originally doing blues. This is not weird, this is like history repeating itself.”

Iggy Azalea has worked hard to be a voice in the hip-hop industry, and will without a doubt continue to work hard and make waves. It is interesting to see someone who goes against the established norms in multiple ways, be so successful. Perhaps that is part of the reason why. Iggy Azalea has raw talent in hip-hop and refuses to let the haters bring her down.
