It finally happened. After months of patient anguish, proud superhero geeks all around the world finally got their first glimpse at the trailer for Zack Snyder’s “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.” So does it look like the first ever on screen battle between The World’s Greatest Detective and The Man of Tomorrow will deliver? In a word: absolutely. The film clearly draws from a number of comic book arcs, but the influence of Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns” cannot be ignored.

Before we give you an absurdly in-depth analysis on the first images of this film, check the trailer out below.

Opening a slow pan through Metropolis — seemingly rebuilt after its controversial destruction — through voice-over we hear several people discuss the implications of Superman’s presence. Some view him as a savior, others view him as a harbinger of doom, others just feel small because of his existence. We see Superman interacting with — as well as saving — people of all cultures. At one point, he even encounters soldiers who bear his symbol on their arms. Whether or not they are working with him, he seems uncomfortable with their godlike reverence of him.

Debate continues, Lex Luthor, played by Jesse Eisenberg, tells us that, “devils don’t come from Hell beneath us. They come from the sky,” followed by an angry mob chanting, “GO HOME, GO HOME!” The pan through Metropolis ends on a statue of Superman, vandalized with the words “FALSE GOD” in crimson red. This leads one to believe that Luthor’s villainous plot will somehow involve spurring the public — as well as Batman — against the Man of Steel.

Then the trailer really shifts into high gear.

We get our first glimpse of Ben Affleck as an aging Bruce Wayne, standing in the what we can safely assume is the Batcave, staring at his old suit. Jeremy Irons, playing Batman’s iconic butler, Alfred, monologues, “that’s how it starts. The fever, the rage, the feeling of powerlessness that can turn good men cruel.” Unlike Christian Bale‘s take on the character, Affleck’s Batman may be more unhinged than we have ever seen on screen.

From here we really begin to see the influence of “The Dark Knight Returns.” In that book, Bruce Wayne comes back to Batman after a ten year retirement when he sees the chaos in the world and can no longer keep “Batman” suppressed. Could he see Superman as a threat worth coming back to face?

The next series of shots are all Bat-action; dressed in his iconic battle armor, he stands in a burned out, abandoned building — possibly the theater he went to with his parents the night of their deaths. If one looks closely in the left hand corner of this shot, a Riddler question mark can be seen spray painted on the wall.

Then a series of shots — the Bat-Plane and Bat-Mobile taking on armed thugs in a sequence clearly inspired by Batman’s assault on the “Mutant” gang in “The Dark Knight Returns,” along with Batman walking out of a burned wreckage. This is the clearest shot we have seen on him yet, and quite frankly, the suit looks fantastic; Affleck clearly bulked up to fill the suit, as well. Another shot of him standing on a Gotham rooftop holding a rifle, invoking a another classic image from “The Dark Knight Returns.

Finally, we see it. Fully armored Batman staring up. Mid-air Superman staring down. A robotic voice — possibly Affleck’s — asks, “tell me something, do you bleed? You will.”

So many questions remain. Why do they fight? How do Wonder Woman and Aquaman fit into this film? We will just have to wait and see what
