Deserter? Turned? It is true that questionable terms surround the recent release of U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. As media outlets embed the lives of the individuals closest to the American prisoner-of-war, a society intent on consuming entertainment can distinctly point out the similarities between Bergdahl’s story and that of Marine Sgt. Brody in the Showtime hit series “Homeland.” Our culture’s craving for narrative plot twists remains insatiable.

Eerily enough, the plot of the series does resemble that of Bergdahl, relating his time as a prisoner to the show’s subjective character, Brody. Bergdahl was held captive by the Taliban-aligned Haqqani network in Afghanistan beginning in June 2009 until his recent hand-off in May.

Unlike Brody, Bergdahl is not automatically being presumed an American hero. Fellow soldiers proclaim that their loyalty in searching for a deserter caused unnecessary deaths in the camp, according to CNN.

Could it be true that he was wandering away from camp and, if so, why? Even more questions remain regarding the terms of Bergdahl’s release. Being freed after five years in captivity at the hands of the Taliban in exchange for the release of five detainees at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base raises concern among every political party surveilling this young man’s return to his home country.

Cause for worry further centers on Bergdahl’s father’s social media involvement. It seems that no matter the soldier’s intent, his father’s cryptic tweets have not helped his son’s cause. Mr. Bergdahl’s support of Guantanamo adds anxiety to the situation, as if viewers were actually witnessing a dramatic series unfold, rather than merely scanning the nightly news.

If returning to an uneasy family situation was not enough, Bergdahl can also anticipate an exchange between himself and former girlfriend, Monica Lee. Having gone missing over five years ago, Lee accepted Bergdahl’s instructions not to wait for him. With his near expectant return, fans of “Homeland” realize another direct comparison between Brody and Bergdahl, this time involving Brody’s wife, Jessica.

Placing entertainment value aside, audiences have to remember that Bergdahl’s upcoming return will not be an easy one. Despite motive or intent, the soldier will most probably face legal and media hounding along with the chilling side effects associated with post-traumatic distress. Sending empathy vibes his way may be the only way for citizens to reach the fellow American. That is all that can be done at the present moment, despite whatever news may break.
