On the top of a very long list of great things about HBO’s hit series “Game of Thrones” is the multidimensionality of all of the characters on the show. Nothing on the show is ever black and white, especially when it comes to the complexity of the characters throughout the series. Although there are certainly some very evil characters on the show, no character can be pinned down right away; rather than automatically labeling a character as “bad” or “good” or even the universal: “bad guy with a soft spot” or the just as common “good guy with a dark side,” the characters evolve as the series progresses, and the audience gains more insight into each character as they continue to watch.

Despite the reputation it has for attracting a predominantly male audience, “Game of Thrones” features very strong characters across both genders. One could even argue that the female characters are even more fierce than their male counterparts. Here are five reasons case and point:

1. Daenerys Targaryen played by Emilia Clark

Daenerys Targaryen, also known as the Mother of Dragons, is arguably the most fierce female character on the show. She started as a scared little girl who took orders from her domineering older brother but she soon learned to stand up for herself and wield her own power for the benefit of her kingdom. Daenerys Targaryen has proved that she is just as powerful as any man; she has the softness and beauty of a woman yet rules her people with an iron fist. She is certainly a strong force to be reckoned with. And she also has three dragons, which is a pretty big advantage.

2. Cersei Lannister played by Lena Headey

Cersei Lannister can easily be pegged as a “bad guy” but when it comes down to it, she is incredibly smart and fiercely loyal. She was a mother of three before her truly evil son Geoffrey was poisoned and she would go to great lengths to protect or avenge her children thereafter. Although she is conniving, she is a complex character that you really love to hate. Furthermore even some of the more heinous things she has done are worth applauding for their ingeniousness.

3. Sansa Stark played by Sophie Turner

Sansa was admittedly pretty annoying in the beginning; she was just a foolish young girl who did not yet know any better than to act like one. However, Sansa was forced to grow up fast after almost her entire family was murdered, and she was left in the hands of the cruel enemy. Say what you will about her, but she is smart enough to know what to say and how to act to stay alive. Yet poor Sansa just can not catch a break; from her betrothal to an insane murderer to having her entire family murdered, and then being held hostage by enemies, Sansa finds herself in one bad situation after another. However, she has not died yet, which is an impressive feat on this show.

4. Arya Stark played by Maisie Williams

Arya Stark, everyone’s favorite ruffian, has certainly matured from the young and fiery little girl she was at the beginning of the show. Now, instead of playing tricks on her siblings, she has to fight to survive and has made a name for herself as a true and clever warrior along the way. She may be small, but she is not to be underestimated; while other little girls played with dolls, she was practicing her swordsmanship.

5. Margaery Tyrell played by Natalie Dormer

Margaery may come off as a flighty and delicate lady, but she is another undercover fierce woman that should not be crossed. She knows how to use her sexuality as a weapon to get what she wants and also how to manipulate rather than be manipulated. Margaery knows exactly what she wants and exactly how to get it. She is certainly poised to take the crown by any means necessary.
