What does it take to be one of the most influential people in the world? In Beyonce’s case, all you need to do is run the world.   On April 25, TIME Magazine released its 11th annual “100 Most Influential People in the World” issue with Beyonce gracing the cover. This issue features major figures in music, movies, and politics, including the controversial ones.

The cover features Beyonce in a white two-piece bathing suit and a sheer cover-up. People have begun to debate what kind of message this sends to young women. Many are comparing it to Lupita Nyong’o’s People cover which “lacks sex appeal.” Although Beyonce is wearing a bikini, it is a relatively modest photo. The bathing suit is high-waisted, the top comes up high on her neckline, and she is wearing very little makeup. Beyonce’s pose is natural and relaxed, and it does not convey an message of sexuality. Whether or not Beyonce’s photo on the cover of TIME conveys a negative or positive message to young women is an endless debate, but her influence in today’s popular culture is much more difficult to question.

One of the more controversial figures listed is Russian President Vladimir Putin, but it would be difficult to make the list without him. Putin, has received a lot of media attention over the course of the last year for obvious reasons. Putin’s actions in the Ukraine have caused pain and suffering for thousands of people, and have them on the edge of a civil war. Putin has also been criticized for his anti-gay policies. Feminist protest group, Pussy Riot, has protested these policies, again turning the public’s attention toward Russia and Putin.

Pope Francis is named as Time’s Most Influential (indiatime.com)

Pope Francis is also listed, and it is not hard to see why. One of the most progressive Popes to date, Pope Francis has called for the need to discuss the position of women and gays within the Catholic church. His desire to bring the doctrine of the Catholic church into the 21st century have not gone unnoticed, and he has become extremely popular amongst Catholics and even non-Catholics.     TIME’s “100 Most Influential People in the World” issue generates a great deal of conversation and debate. It shows us the people who have influenced the lives of millions, even billions of people the world over. Besides Beyonce and Pope Francis, the list also includes Miley Cyrus, Malala Yousafzai, Barack Obama, Mary Jo White, and Kim Jung Un.
