Since May, TLC has been contemplating the cancellation of their reality show “19 Kids and Counting” following the Josh Duggar molestation allegations. Finally, the show is at its end.

TLC’s television show that followed the life of the Duggar family ran for 10 seasons, but the pressure the network was facing to cancel it became too much. The television network has bigger plans than just distancing themselves from the show.

“We took it as an opportunity to step further than just ‘How do we protect ourselves?’ and step into ‘how do we protect our audience and protect children?’” TLC’s president, Marjorie Kaplan, said. “Our hope is to do more of that, in a way that’s thoughtful and respectful of child abuse — in the Duggar family and across America.”

Since the Duggar molestation allegations came to light, TLC has teamed up with the anti-sexual violence organizations RAINN and Darkness to Light. Their plan is to use the Duggar family controversy as an opportunity to shine light on sexual abuse.

In August, TLC will be airing a commercial-free documentary in an effort to raise awareness of child sexual abuse by showing those affected. Jill and Jessa Duggar have agreed to participate in the documentary after news got out that their older brother Josh had touched them inappropriately when they were younger.

“We look forward to working with TLC on this upcoming special documentary and hope that it is an encouragement to many,” said the Duggar family.

Kaplan has been the president for TLC for about a year, and already she plans to change TLC’s image to one that is “a brand with purpose.” When she first started as president, Kaplan was unaware of the high rate of child abuse in America. Now that she knows the problem exists, she believes TLC can help make a difference.

It may have taken close to two months for TLC to make up their mind, but with the cancellation finally taking place, they can now work on changing their image. Teaming up with RAINN and Darkness to Light is a great first step in joining the fight against child abuse and truly changing the world for the better.
