On June 16, Donald Trump made negative comments about Mexico and its people while announcing that he was running for president; these statements have caused problems for the candidate since.

Trump has recently stated that he knew his comments about Mexican immigrants being “rapists” would cause some backlash, but he didn’t think it would be “quite this severe.”

In the weeks following Trump’s presidential announcement, many businesses have started cutting ties with the candidate. Leading the pack of businesses that ended their professional relationship with Trump was the Spanish-language television network, Univision.

“We will not be airing the Miss USA pageant on July 12 or working on any other projects tied to the Trump Organization,” said Univision.

In response to Univision not airing the pageant, Trump is suing the network for $500 million. Four days after Univision refused to air the Miss USA pageant, NBC Universal also chose to end their business relationship with Trump. The presidential candidate is now threatening to sue NBC Universal, as well.

It’s been weeks since Trump’s comments, and businesses are still distancing themselves from him. Companies like Televisa, Farouk Systems, 5 Rabbit Cerveceria, Ora TV, NASCAR, Macy’s, and Serta have all publically ended current and future deals with Trump.

“I knew it was going to be bad because I was told this. All my life I have been told this: if you are successful, you don’t run for office,” said Trump to Fox News, in response to the many businesses distancing themselves from the billionaire.

Although companies are continuing to end their business deals with Trump, he stands by his comments about Mexican immigrants. Trump has no plans to end his presidential campaign over this controversy, while remaining confident that he will win the Republican nomination.

It’s still too early to tell how this negative PR will affect his run for office, but if Trump continues to  stand by his statements, he may further damage his business relationships.
