America is enduring a huge trial between its police and its communities, and the sports world is smack dab in the middle of it.

In our country, when you are fortunate enough to be successful and have a huge platform, you are expected (for better or for worse) to use it to help in the advancement of the American people, as a whole. This is more particularly expected for our athletes, who are among the most heralded people in our broken society.

LeBron James is at the top of the sports world and at the head of all this and has decided to ingratiate himself into the conversation of protests and how we can heal the divide between the police and the community.

James is known for being a “point-forward” on the court where he is always looking to distribute the ball to his teammates and put his team in the best positions to win every game. While he’s become an all time great player (in my opinion will be the greatest player of all time) at doing that, he’s done an even better job at playing the “point-forward” position in our quest to develop into a better world and society. He’s distributed his money into the right places (investments and charity) and he’s trying to propel the world forward by using his platform to speak his mind and put us in better positions to be peaceful and civil.

James, who recently was praised for donating over $41 Million in scholarships for incoming college students through his foundation, has been very active in forming better futures for children all around the world. So, it’s no surprise that he’s put himself into the fold when it comes to this current issue.

During the Cavs recent 2016 Media Day, James was asked about what he felt about the Colin Kaepernick protest of kneeling during the National Anthem.

James expressed his support for Kaepernick in his protest by again thinking of the children, but this time, referring to his very own.

“I look at my son being four years removed from driving his own car and being able to leave the house on his own,” James said, “It’s a scary situation that if my son calls me and said he’s been pulled over, that I’m not that confident that things are going to go well and that my son is going to return home.”

As a father, James understands how terrifying it is to know that the world is at a place where even if you do everything that the police tell you to do, that you can still have something happen to you. This is why he has been the leader of the charge of athletes speaking out and using their platforms to make a change for a while now.

At last year’s ESPY Awards, James, along with fellow players Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade and Chris Paul, stood on the stage and spoke about the injustices that are going on and what all of the athletes and celebrities in that room could do to make a positive change. They stood up for the athletes who aren’t.

Athletes, white or black, need to look at the example that James is setting and use their own platforms to help make a change and make society better and safer for everyone. All athletes in our sports landscape have influence on the people of our world and have fans who really care about what they have to say. James has played a huge role in using his platform for positivity and that has led to players like Kaepernick taking a stand.

Whether you agree with the form of protest or not, agree with the fact that there is change on all sides that need to be made, by our community and police. If you care about America, use your platforms to make a positive one.
