We won’t deny the impact that social media has had on our culture — selfies in particular. Alyssa Milano used them to challenge notions about women’s bodies, Chris Rock used them to highlight police bias, even law enforcement agencies have begun using them as a means of capturing criminals.

Of course, with all this good, we must also see the bad side of the selfie. Disney  has recently placed a strict ban on “selfie sticks” — sticks one would attach a smartphone or GoPro to — in all of their parks.

An official from Disney told BBC:

“Handheld extension poles have become a growing safety concern for both our guests and cast.”

The wide reach of these devices can increase the possibility that a simple photo-op will lead to the sticks accidentally striking fellow park guests; park officials also fear that the sticks could cause serious damage or injury on rides if they ever interfered with mechanical systems.

In the United States, the ban went into effect on Tuesday, with parks in France and China expected to follow suit.

The theme parks are not the first place to implement regulations such as these. Museums such as the Smithsonian have enacted strict regulations regarding selfie sticks as a means of ensuring the safety of patrons, as well as protecting art and artifacts from accidental damage. Aside from this, many major sporting events, conferences, and conventions have also placed bans on the products.

Although these venues have mostly cited safety concerns with their bans, another very major factor cannot be ignored: selfie sticks have become annoying. At concerts, sporting events, and even business conventions, they obscure views and hinder experiences. Everybody loves a good selfie, but not at the expense of those behind you.
