During the 2015 Gamescom, Blizzard announced that “Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void” will be the end of the “Starcraft II” storyline, and that they will now consider making a new Warcraft real time strategy (RTS) game.

A “Warcraft” RTS hasn’t been released since “Warcraft III: Frozen Throne” in 2003, so fans have waited over a decade for another game in the series. “Starcraft II” producer Tim Morten is looking for a new RTS project now that his series is coming to an end, and he believes “Warcraft” or “Starcraft III” is where his team will head next.

“It’s very rewarding for us to hear that there’s demand out there for more RTS content in the Warcraft universe so once we’re done with Void I think we’ll get together as a team and talk about what would inspire us to work on next. There’s no question, though, that we’ll consider Warcraft, Starcraft, or even new ideas,” said Morten.

The “Warcraft” RTS series was likely pushed off for so long because Blizzard was focusing on the massively multiplayer online (MMO) game “World of Warcraft.” However, “World of Warcraft” subscriptions are currently at the lowest they have been since 2005 at 5.6 million people. It’s only taken six months for the MMO to lose 4.4 million players, so this could have something to do with Blizzard’s decision to lean towards a “Warcraft” RTS.

If Morten and his team decide to develop a “Warcraft” RTS, they may have to make some changes from the old games to keep up with the new age of RTS. Producing units, buildings, and upgrades took a very long time in older “Warcraft” games, and now that games like “Starcraft II” have sped up this process, newer RTS games may want to aswell. Blizzard would rarely release balance patches for “Warcraft III,” but this may also need to change with a new game in the series. Balance patches are a big part of keeping races on the same level of strength, and making each one viable to play in the competitive scene.

It’s still too early to tell if there will be a new “Warcraft” installment, but fans of the series may have another way to experience this RTS. “Heroes of the Storm” director Dustin Browder has stated that the game could get a new mode that’s much like “Warcraft III,” and since it’s a Blizzard game, they can use “Warcraft” characters and lore.
