Summer is the perfect time to do all the things you did not have time for during the school year, but it is also the time where the money you had saved up seems to disappear as fast as fast as your sunscreen. That is why finding cheap or free things to do is a necessity.

1. Free Concerts. There are always free concerts happening in and around most cities. If you happen to be in New York City, one the favorite events for summer is the Central Park Summer Stage (most are free except for larger acts). This year’s lineup includes John Butler Trio, Beck, The Neighborhood, and more.

2. Cut out the excess. Instead of paying to eat out all the time, have friends over for a meal. You can mix it up by cooking new foods you have never tried before, or keep it simple by having a barbecue. This rule can also apply to expensive coffee drinks. Instead of spending $3.75 for a small cup of coffee, save the cash for transportation money and explore new places.

3. Window shop and people watch. When you are bored with nothing to do, nothing is better than grabbing a friend to walk around, explore, and people watch. Enjoy strolling without having an agenda or place to be. Maybe you will happen upon a cool shop or meet someone new.

4. Netflix it. Forget spending big bucks at the movie theater; watch Netflix or RedBox instead. Netflix has a large selection of movies from blockbusters to cult classics. If you do not have a Netflix account, RedBox locations have a selection of new release and popular movies to choose from. For only $1.29 per night, it’s a deal you can not beat.

5. Learn something. Many cities have a ton of free museums to visit or specials for summer. If you need to beat the heat, one of the best ways is to step inside, explore a different world, contemplate some art, and enjoy the free A/C.
