Every year, humans emit nearly six billion metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Americans, on average, create four and a half pounds of garbage (municipal solid waste) a day. If you multiply that by 300 million Americans, and the United States produces nearly one and a half billion pounds of trash everyday.

Oil and natural gas keep our houses warm, our cars running, and are used to make many of the products we use everyday. Many people are unaware of the dramatic use of oil and natural gas, and they do not pay attention to the amount of trash they produce or toxins they emit into the atmosphere.

To many people, this absent mindedness about our effect on the planet is a result of the fact that we do not have to see the giant landfills we create or the harm we unknowingly do to other living things. It will not be long before our wasteful ways and inattention to the environment catches up to us — in many ways it already has. That is why the work of environmentalists to create clean renewable energy is so imperative.

One company that is working to create affordable, sustainable energy is Green Mountain Energy Company. Green Mountain’s mission is to create clean energy and an even cleaner world. Their focus is using sun, wind, and water energy to create 100 percent renewable, clean energy. In doing so, Green Mountain cuts down on emissions of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and mercury — all substances that harm our supply of water and food. Their use of solar and wind power does not rely on the extraction of fossil-fuels that greatly damage the land and surrounding environment. Using clean, renewable energy also preserves our beautiful world for future generations.

The development and use of renewable energy is an economically sound choice, as well. It creates employment opportunities in the green sector and secures America’s energy future. At the moment, Green Mountain Energy is cheaper than that of ConEdison in New York City, N.Y. Green Mountain is the main energy supplier to the Empire State Building.

Choosing an energy company like Green Mountain is just one of the ways to decrease your carbon footprint. There are other, simpler ways in which everyone can be more conscious of the impact we each have on the environment.

1. Use reusable bags. The U.S. alone uses 84 million plastic bags a year. Plastics are not biodegradable, and by using reusable bags, you cut out waste from landfills.

2. Turn off the lights. When you leave a room, always remember to turn off the lights. Each year, thousands of dollars are wasted by leaving on lights and wasting electricity.

3. Use fewer napkins. It is easy to overuse napkins and create extra waste with each meal. Be conscious of how many you use, and try to use each one for as long as possible.

4. Take a shorter shower. For every two minutes you cut out of your shower time, you can save up to 10 gallons of water. This will save water and your money.

5. Buy local. Not only does buying local help support the economy and local farmers, it also helps to cut down on pollution. It takes a lot of energy to get your food from the farm to your plate. By buying local, you cut down on the amount of greenhouse gases emitted for your food to be trucked or flown in.

6. Recycle, recycle, recycle. Recycling is one of the most important and simple ways we can lessen our impact on the environment. By recycling, you can cut down on air and water pollution and keep trash out of our landfills.

7. Spread the word. Let others know the impact they have on the environment and how they can help keep our world clean and beautiful.
