In Vancouver, there is a pizzeria-vapor lounge called Mega Ill, owned by two brothers named Stephen and Mark Klokeid, who are providing customers with a new kind of topping on their pizzas — marijuana.

After dealing with his own illness, Stephen desired to create a place for people to safely medicate. “I think it’s about where we want people to use cannabis, and I think in a safe 18-plus environment,” said Klokeid. “We don’t serve alcohol. Even recreationally, I think it’s a better alternative.”

When Stephen came upon a pizzeria in Cambodia called Happy Pizza, he realized he stumbled on something he knew he wanted to create. At Happy Pizza, the Cambodians garnish their pizzas with marijuana. But at Mega Ill they infuse the cannabis oil into olive oil and brush it on the sauce before adding cheese. Another alternative they created for the customers is that they can ground the marijuana and add it to the pizza before baking it for the customers.

What’s fantastic about this idea is that when eating marijuana, it allows you to have a different high than smoking. It relaxes your body a lot more than smoking and takes about an hour for it to hit you. It affects your body because it’s a lot stronger than it is when you’re smoking it.

At Mega Ill, you can either eat some healthy, delicious pizza while you smoke marijuana out of a clean vaporizer or you can order pot as a pizza topping. If you do add the pot as a topping, it will only cost $10 dollars. The pizza doughs are their specialty; they are made soft with whole wheat crust that contains hemp hearts. Despite the pizzas not being thin and crisp, the dough is critical to the customers if they’re staying there long.

If you’re worried about the taste or smell of the pizza being overwhelmed by the marijuana in it, there is no need to worry about it at all. The brothers strain the oil infusion so it can be clean of any plant matter and fiber. “That’s the mark of a good cannabis cook,” he states. “You have to hide the flavor of the cannabis. You don’t an overpowering, weedy, chompy pizza.”

It’s apparent the pizzeria is not the typical pizza place you normally go to with the new topping they have. But that’s not the only thing that makes Mega Ill different; there are nine different kinds of toppings you can choose from. With The Chinese Take-Out, you can choose from having baby corn, baby bok choy, broccoli, roasted chick, and sesame seeds. Then there is the Shaved Parmesan and The Eden, which you may also manipulate the ingredients to make a unique pizza that is all your own. These toppings cost $16 each and on Wednesdays, also known as Wow Wednesdays, it’s two for $20.

So as long as you’re 18 years old and have a cannabis card you’re able to go inside and feast on their specialty pizzas. It’s a delightful way of helping the community who suffer harsh illnesses in Vancouver.
