Theological ideas are important aspects of modern day issues.

Although religion and theology are topics that are heavily debated in society today, almost every culture is heavily influenced by one religious view or another.  Moreover, improving one’s knowledge of religious and theological ideas, is extremely important for global acceptance and understanding. This is why a class on world religions should be a part of every school’s curriculum.

A theological education is important for people of all ages because it allows us to learn about others cultures and their historical backgrounds. In knowing what others believe and practice, we can better understand, accept, and love those that are different from us.

In the United States, people have a shallow understanding of religious views around the world. For instance, those in the media tend to misconstrue the image of Muslims and their perceptions tend to threaten the Islamic culture and identity. Educating people about the history and the theology of Islam, and other religions, would hopefully help to clear up common misconceptions many people hold.

Learning about other faith disciplines is a great way to challenge oneself and grown intellectually and spiritually. The ideas from many different religions often overlap and are more similar than they are different.  Therefore, expanding one’s knowledge of the religious views of the world, is also a great way to explore one’s own faith.

It is very common to travel to countries that are based on different theological ideas than one’s own. Having a background or training in the religious views of the world, as well as those that play a role in the places that one may visit one day, may be helpful in understanding and engaging better with different cultures.

A class on world religions should be in the curriculum of both public and private schools. Religion and theology will always be a part of the conflict and hot topics in today’s world; thus, having a better understanding of where others are coming from is the only way to acceptance and peaceful coexistence.
