We still don’t know anything about the motive of the two killers, but Canada is on high alert this Sunday evening French time. According to the first report by local authorities, ten people were killed in 13 different locations in Saskatchewan, an isolated region in the country’s mid-west, most notably in the village of Weldon and James Smith Cree Nation. At least fifteen people were reportedly injured.
Authorities have released the identities of the two alleged killers. It’s Damian and Miles Sanderson. “Several victims have been injured, 15 of whom have been taken to various hospitals so far,” they added in a press conference. The Saskatchewan Health Authority said it has implemented emergency protocols to deal with a “large number of critical patients.”
Were some victims targeted and others “randomly attacked”?
A dangerous person alert was issued Sunday morning for people across the province of Saskatchewan after reports of “multiple stabbings in multiple locations” in the James Smith Cree Nation Aboriginal community and the nearby village of Weldon.
“Today’s attacks in Saskatchewan are horrific and heartbreaking. Thinking of those who lost loved ones and those affected,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote on Twitter.
Police received the first call at 5:40 a.m. local time, reporting a stabbing, followed by others. Officials believe “some of the victims were targeted by the suspects and others were attacked randomly.”
According to evidence collected by the police, the duo may have fled in the direction of Regina, about 300 kilometers to the south. But the alert was extended to the provinces of Manitoba and Alberta after authorities realized the two suspects had been reported as suspicious.
The hunt is taking place as the city of Regina is at its busiest this Sunday between Labor Day festivities and an American football game. Police security has been deployed there to ensure maximum security. Police have set up a checkpoint on the highway leading into Regina and are checking the identities of all motorists.
