An employee of a McDonald’s restaurant in New York was fatally shot and on the brink of death of a teenager and his mother after an argument over cold fries, police and a local newspaper reported Wednesday.

It all started with a nasty argument between a 40-year-old woman and a waiter over fries she thought were served cold, the newspaper reported, citing police sources. Feeling mocked by McDonald’s employees about the temperature of her fries, the customer, confiding in the New York Post, later calls her son via video.

The latter enters the restaurant and the two confront the waiter before going outside to argue. The customer’s son then pointed a gun at the employee and shot him dead, the newspaper quoted police as saying.
