A Mexican freelance journalist who went missing on August 9 has been found dead in the state of Sonora (Northwest), prosecutors announced on Tuesday, August 16. The body of Juan Arjon Lopez, 62, founder of the Facebook news page “A qué le temes” (“What are you afraid of”), was found in the city of San Luis Rio Colorado, near the US border. Sonora attorney Indira Contreras told reporters.
According to the lawsuit, the cause of death was cranio-encephalic trauma due to blunt force trauma. “No investigation is excluded”, the lawyer said. According to Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Juan Arjon López switched his job as a journalist to work at a local restaurant.
According to RSF, 13 journalists have been murdered since the beginning of the year in Mexico, one of the world’s most dangerous countries for the profession. However, the organization does not include Juan Arjon Lopez in this evaluation at this point.
