Uganda is preparing to launch a massive project to drill more than 400 oil wells by giant Total.

Total is about to launch an impressive new project in Uganda. The group will invest nine billion euros to exploit the oil in the East African country’s soil. The project is initially divided into two parts, with 426 wells responsible for oil extraction in northern Uganda. Then, the oil has to be transported to the port through a 1,443 km pipeline ThangaIn Tanzania.

Evacuees and hazards to the environment

The plan has been heavily criticized, especially since wild animals already inhabit these lands and may be at risk. Thousands of people living in this area will also be dispossessed. More than 100,000 people are expected to be affected by the project. However, despite pressure from Ugandan authorities, some of the project’s opponents will contest, Total has promised to re-home them. In addition, 132 oil wells will be constructed in the Uganda National Park. This plan goes against all the recommendations of experts to control global warming.
